In Alutiiq/Sugpiaq culture, men could transform themselves into Killer Whales in order to hunt on the sea.

Traditionally, the Medicine Bag was used to hold items that provided protection from evil spirits.  When an infant was born the amniotic sac was dried by the midwife and placed into a medicine bag and put around the infants' neck.  It provided reassurance and protection for the infant.

This Killer Whale Medicine Bag is 15" inches long and the pouch is 3" inches by 2" inches.  The pouch is made with a cobalt blue polyester fabric with a turquoise mesh overlay to give the illusion of water.  There is no clasp; the bag can easily slip over your head.

The Killer Whale is ceramic and there is a metal fish charm at the bottom of the pouch.

Dark green speciality yarn is used to create the kelp and varigated embroidery thread that ranges from dark orange to pink for the coral.

Seed beads in colors of blues, purples, green and clear are used for the chain, trim/fringe and "sand or gravel" at the bottom of the pouch.
