In the past, Alutiiq/Sugpiaq men could transform themselves into Killer Whales in order to hunt on the sea.
The Medicine Bag was used to hold items that provided protection from evil spirits. Traditionally when an infant was born, the amniotic sac was dried by the midwife and placed into the medicine bag and then put around the infants' neck. It provided reassurance and protection for the infant.
This Killer Whale Medicine Bag is made with olive green and cobalt blue polyester fabrics. There is a turquoise mesh overlay to give the illusion of water. The necklace is 14 1/2" inches long and the pouch is 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" inches. There is no clasp, as the chain is long enough to slip over your head.
The Killer Whale is ceramic and there is a metal gold-colored sand dollar at the bottom of the pouch.
Dark green speciality yarn is used to create the kelp and varigated embroidery thread in colors ranging from dark orange to pink for the coral reef.
Seed beads ranging in colors from dark blues to greens are used for the chain, trim/fringe and "sand or gravel" at the bottom of the pouch.
