Medicine or Amulet bags were used to hold items that provided protection from evil spirits.

Within Sugpiaq/Alutiiq culture, when an infant was born, the anmiotic sac was dried by the midwife and placed into a Medicine bag and placed around the infant's neck.  It provided reassurance and protection for the infant.

This seascape medicine bag is made with dark navy satin fabric.  It is 17" inches in length (including the beaded trimming).  The medicine bag is 3 1/2" by 2" inches wide.  The sea otter is clay and 1/2" long.

The kelp is green speciality yarn and varigated embroidery thread is used to create the coral which ranges from yellows, pink and coral.

There is also a small starfish charm bead at the bottom.

The beaded necklace string is in colors complimentary to the dark navy fabric -- seed beads in clear, pale green and blue.

There is no clasp, but there is sufficient room to slip the necklace over your head.
